Saudi filmmaker Shahad Ameen's road movie "Hijra" has delved deep into the country's multi-cultural DNA, intending to show the country's little-known aspect as a melting pot, says the director. The film, which is Saudi Arabia's Academy Award submission and is in competition at the Red Sea Film Festival this week, is the second feature from Ameen whose feminist fable "Scales" made a splash after launching from Venice in 2021.
Ameen, who was speaking to Variety, said she wanted to present Saudi Arabia in a very different way, showcasing the country's diverse cultures and traditions that are often overlooked. "I wanted to present Saudi Arabia in a very different way," Ameen explained. "We're not just a country of sand dunes and oil rigs. We have a rich history, a rich culture, and a rich diversity that I wanted to showcase in this film."
"Hijra," which translates to "migration" or "journey" in Arabic, follows the story of a group of Saudi women from different generations who embark on a road trip across the desert, forming an unbreakable bond along the way. The film is a testament to the country's evolving social landscape, where women are increasingly taking on more prominent roles in society.
The film's release comes at a time when Saudi Arabia is undergoing significant changes, with the country's Vision 2030 plan aimed at diversifying its economy and promoting cultural exchange. Ameen's film is part of this movement, providing a unique glimpse into the country's complex identity.
"Hijra" has been well-received by critics, with many praising its nuanced portrayal of Saudi women and the country's cultural heritage. The film's success is also a testament to the growing influence of Saudi filmmakers, who are increasingly making their mark on the global film industry.
The Red Sea Film Festival, where "Hijra" is competing, is a major platform for emerging talent in the region. The festival has been instrumental in promoting Arab cinema and providing a platform for filmmakers to showcase their work to a global audience.
As for Ameen's next project, she is tight-lipped about the details, but hints that she is working on a new film that will continue to push the boundaries of Saudi cinema. "I'm always looking for new ways to tell stories that are authentic and meaningful," Ameen said. "I'm excited to see where this journey takes me next."
