Breaking News: Former Footballer Joey Barton Handed Suspended Sentence for X Post Controversy
Former footballer Joey Barton has been handed a suspended sentence for sending grossly offensive electronic communications on social media platform X. Barton, 43, was found guilty by a jury at Liverpool Crown Court of sending the posts between January and March 2024.
Barton was given six months in custody, suspended for 18 months, and ordered to do 200 hours of unpaid work in the community. He was also made to pay more than £20,000 in costs. The posts in question included comparisons between TV football pundits Lucy Ward and Eni Aluko and serial killers Fred and Rose West, as well as a derogatory comment about broadcaster Jeremy Vine.
Barton's case has been ongoing since the social media posts sparked controversy earlier this year. The trial heard that Barton had "crossed the line between free speech and a crime" with his online comments.
The Honorary Recorder of Liverpool, Judge Andrew Menary KC, handed down the sentence. Barton's lawyer has not commented on the decision. This is a developing story, and we will provide updates as more information becomes available.
