Men's Attitudes May Be the Key to Declining Birth Rates

Demographers have long focused on the factors preventing women from having children, but a growing body of research suggests that men's attitudes toward gender, caregiving, and relationships may also play a significant role in declining birth rates. According to a recent study, nearly six in 10 American men favor a return to traditional gender roles, with many seeing this as a solution to the problem of falling birth rates. Rachel Cohen Booth, a senior policy correspondent for Vox, notes that men's perspectives on these issues have been largely ignored in the discussion around fertility trends. "We have far less data on men's perspectives than women's, and even less on how those viewpoints shape outcomes," she said. "But, men do have opinions on these topics, even if we haven't examined them all that closely." Booth points out that American men are more likely to see falling birth rates as a problem, and also more likely to want a return to traditional gender roles. This is in contrast to women, who are more likely to prioritize equality and flexibility in their relationships and careers. "Men are more likely to see the problem as a lack of traditional masculinity, rather than a lack of support for women's choices," Booth said. The desire for traditional gender roles is not unique to American men, however. In many countries around the world, men are also expressing a desire to return to more traditional roles and expectations. According to a recent survey, nearly 70% of men in Japan believe that men should be the primary breadwinners in their households, while 60% of men in South Korea believe that women should prioritize their roles as caregivers. Despite these trends, many experts argue that traditional gender roles are not a solution to the problem of declining birth rates. "Men's search for meaning is everyone's problem," said Booth. "We need to be having a more nuanced conversation about what it means to be a man, and how we can support men in their roles as partners, fathers, and caregivers." In recent years, there has been a growing recognition of the need to support men in their roles as caregivers and partners. Many organizations and governments are launching initiatives to promote men's involvement in childcare and household work, and to challenge traditional notions of masculinity. As the conversation around fertility trends continues to evolve, it is clear that men's attitudes and perspectives will play an increasingly important role.
