Democrat Eileen Higgins won the Miami mayor's race on Tuesday, defeating a Republican endorsed by President Donald Trump to end her party's nearly three-decade losing streak and give Democrats a boost in one of the last electoral battles ahead of the 2026 midterms. Higgins, 61, will be the first woman to lead the city of Miami.
Higgins, a longtime Miami resident and community leader, campaigned on a platform of protecting the city's immigrant population and addressing issues related to affordable housing and public transportation. In a statement, Higgins said, "We are facing rhetoric from elected officials that is so dehumanizing and cruel, especially against immigrant populations." She added, "As mayor, I will work tirelessly to ensure that our city remains a welcoming and inclusive place for all residents, regardless of their immigration status."
Higgins' opponent, Emilio Gonzalez, a former city manager, was endorsed by President Trump and campaigned on a platform of law and order and economic growth. Gonzalez conceded the election and called Higgins to congratulate her on her victory. In a statement, Gonzalez said, "I respect the will of the voters and look forward to working with Mayor-elect Higgins to ensure a smooth transition."
The Miami mayoral election was officially nonpartisan, but Higgins, a proud Democrat, made no secret of her party affiliation throughout the campaign. Her victory marks a significant shift in the city's politics and could have implications for future elections in the region.
Higgins' win is also significant because of her commitment to addressing the city's affordable housing crisis. According to the Miami-Dade County Homeless Trust, there are over 3,000 people experiencing homelessness in Miami, and many more are at risk of losing their housing due to rising rents and gentrification. Higgins has promised to work with local developers and community groups to increase the supply of affordable housing and protect existing affordable units from being converted into market-rate housing.
The outcome of the election is also seen as a boost for Democrats ahead of the 2026 midterms. The party has been struggling to regain momentum in the region, and Higgins' victory could provide a much-needed shot in the arm. However, it remains to be seen whether the party can sustain this momentum and translate it into victories in other elections.
As Higgins prepares to take office, she faces a number of challenges, including addressing the city's affordable housing crisis, improving public transportation, and ensuring that the city remains a welcoming and inclusive place for all residents. In a statement, Higgins said, "I am committed to working with all stakeholders to ensure that our city remains a place where everyone can thrive, regardless of their background or immigration status."
