Porsche and Audi's EVs Can Now Recharge on Any Tesla Supercharger in North America
In a significant move for electric vehicle (EV) owners, Porsche and Audi announced that their vehicles can now be recharged at any Tesla Supercharger station across North America. This development comes after the Volkswagen Group, which owns both brands, implemented NACS compatibility for its vehicles in December 2023.
According to Porsche, existing owners of Taycan and Macan Electric models can reserve a free NACS to DC adapter with the My Porsche app to connect to the Tesla Supercharger network. During this initial phase, drivers of compatible Porsche EVs must use the Tesla app at Superchargers, but will eventually be able to charge with the My Porsche app in "the coming months," said Porsche Ashton Stan.
Audi is also introducing its own branded adapter, which will arrive with newer 2025 model year options, including the Q6 e-tron, A6 Sportback e-tron, and e-tron GT. However, Audi's Q4 e-tron will not currently have access to Tesla Superchargers.
This expansion of the Supercharger network is a result of Tesla's decision to open up its NACS port to other automakers. The Volkswagen Group had announced in December 2023 that it would implement NACS compatibility for its brands, including Porsche and Audi.
The implications of this development are significant. With access to over 30,000 Tesla Superchargers across North America, EV owners from these two brands will have a vast network of charging stations at their disposal. This could alleviate range anxiety and make long-distance travel more feasible for EV owners.
"We're excited to offer our customers the convenience of charging on the Tesla Supercharger network," said Porsche Ashton Stan. "This is an important step forward in making electric vehicles more accessible and practical for everyday driving."
The rollout of NACS compatibility is a testament to the growing trend towards interoperability among EV manufacturers. As the industry continues to evolve, it's likely that we'll see even more collaborations between brands.
Currently, Porsche and Audi owners can reserve their free adapters through the My Porsche app or by visiting a dealership. The full integration with the Tesla Supercharger network is expected to be completed in the coming months.
This development marks an important milestone for EV adoption in North America, offering consumers greater flexibility and convenience when it comes to charging their vehicles on the go.
