McAvoy, who was promoting his directorial debut "California Schemin" at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), was allegedly punched by another patron at Charlottes Room bar, said a source close to the actor. The incident occurred two days after the film's premiere at TIFF.
"He was having a casual get-together with the producers of his movie and, as he later learned when speaking with the staff, there was a man who drank too much who was getting escorted out," the source told People magazine. "James' back was to him, and the man just punched him."
McAvoy had not interacted with the attacker previously, nor did he provoke the attack, according to eyewitnesses. Other patrons at Charlottes Room rushed to his aid after the incident.
The Toronto Police Service confirmed that an investigation is underway into the assault. "We are looking into a report of an altercation involving a male victim and suspect," said a police spokesperson in a statement. "No charges have been laid, and we cannot comment further on an ongoing investigation."
McAvoy's representatives declined to comment on the incident.
