Nikon Unveils First Cinema Camera Co-Designed with RED
Nikon has released its first cinema camera co-developed with the company it acquired last year, RED. The Nikon ZR is a camera that combines RED's expertise in color science and video codecs with Nikon's advanced subject detect AF and in-body stabilization.
The Nikon ZR boasts a partially stacked 24MP sensor with a Dual Base ISO of 800-6400, promising 15 stops of dynamic range for high low-light sensitivity and greater detail in shadows and highlights. The camera will output 12K RAW or 6K video at 60 fps, or 4K at 120 fps.
"We're excited to bring this innovative technology to creators," said a Nikon spokesperson. "The ZR is the perfect tool for filmmakers who need high-quality footage without breaking the bank."
Nikon's mirrorless cameras are known for their high dynamic range, and the company has leaned into that feature for the ZR. The camera will use RED's new R3D NE internal RAW format and a log format called Log3G10.
The Nikon ZR is set to compete with other creator-oriented models like Canon's C50 and Sony's FX3, but at a lower price point. This could be a game-changer for independent filmmakers who need high-quality equipment without the hefty price tag.
RED's acquisition by Nikon last year marked a significant shift in the film industry. The partnership has allowed both companies to pool their resources and expertise, resulting in the creation of innovative products like the ZR.
"The collaboration between RED and Nikon is a perfect example of how two companies can come together to create something truly special," said Jim Jannard, founder of RED. "The ZR is a testament to what can be achieved when talented individuals from different backgrounds work together."
The Nikon ZR is currently available for pre-order, with shipments expected to begin in the coming weeks.
