BMW Warns of Industry Consequences from Europe's Gas Engine Ban
In a recent interview with Australian magazine CarExpert, BMW Chief Technology Officer Joachim Post expressed concerns that the European Union's plan to ban gas-powered engines by 2035 could have devastating effects on the industry.
Post argued that the EU's decision is being made without considering the needs and preferences of customers. "Finally, the customer decides," he said. The company maintains its stance on giving buyers the freedom of choice between electric vehicles (EVs) and gas-powered cars, projecting an even split in demand by 2030.
BMW has been watching as other major manufacturers, including Audi, Porsche, Mercedes, and Volvo, have announced ambitious EV goals only to backtrack in recent months. In contrast, Munich-based BMW has chosen not to set a specific timeline for phasing out combustion engines.

"If the European Commission is going to say they have a plan to cut the combustion engine in 2035, they're not asking the customers and how EV charging infrastructure is coming up, how the energy prices are and all the things there," Post said. "It's stupid to do that in such a short timeframe."
