Albania Appoints AI Bot as Minister to Tackle Corruption
TIRANA, Albania - In a bid to curb corruption, Prime Minister Edi Rama's government has appointed an artificial intelligence (AI) bot as minister to oversee public procurement. Diella, meaning "sun" in Albanian, will manage and award all public tenders, aiming to make the process 100% free of corruption.
Rama unveiled his new Cabinet on September 11, stating that Diella is a "first Cabinet member who isn't physically present, but is virtually created by AI." The AI bot's appointment has sparked both praise and criticism from various stakeholders. Critics argue that relying on technology to tackle corruption may not address the root causes of the problem.
According to experts, Albania has long struggled with corruption scandals related to public tenders. The country's location in the Balkans makes it a hub for organized crime groups seeking to launder money from international trafficking operations. Rama believes that Diella will bring much-needed transparency and accountability to the public procurement process. Others argue that Diella's appointment may create more problems than it solves.
The implementation of Diella's role will be closely monitored by international organizations and local watchdog groups. The World Bank has already expressed interest in collaborating with the Albanian government to develop a robust monitoring system for public tenders.
