FAA Seeks to Fine Boeing $3.1 Million for Safety Violations, Door Plug Blowout
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has proposed a fine of $3.1 million against Boeing for safety violations related to an incident in which a door plug panel blew off on an Alaska Airlines jetliner during flight.
According to the FAA, the proposed penalty is for safety violations that occurred from September 2023 through February 2024. During this period, an Alaska Airlines Boeing 737 Max 9 experienced a blowout of its paneled-over exit door called a door plug shortly after taking off from Portland, Oregon in January 2024.
The incident, which was investigated by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), revealed that key bolts were missing from the door plug. Fortunately, none of the 171 passengers or six crew members on board were seriously injured, and the pilots were able to land the plane safely back at the airport.
"We take these safety issues very seriously," said an FAA spokesperson. "The proposed fine reflects our commitment to ensuring that aircraft manufacturers adhere to strict safety standards."
Boeing has faced criticism in recent years over its handling of safety issues related to its 737 Max model, which was grounded for several months following two fatal crashes in 2018 and 2019.
The proposed fine is a significant blow to Boeing's reputation and bottom line. The company has already faced billions of dollars in losses due to the grounding of the 737 Max and other safety-related issues.
