UK's Data Watchdog Warns Students Are Breaching Their Schools' IT Systems
LONDON - The UK's data-protecting Information Commissioner's Office has issued a warning about a worrying trend of students hacking their own school and college IT systems for fun or as part of dares. Since 2022, the ICO has investigated 215 hacks and breaches originating from inside education settings, with 57 carried out by children.
According to new data, almost a third of the breaches involved students illegally logging into staff computer systems by guessing passwords or stealing details from teachers. In one incident, a seven-year-old was involved in a data breach and subsequently referred to the National Crime Agency's Cyber Choices programme to help them understand the seriousness of their actions.
"It's alarming that children are accessing sensitive information without proper authorization," said John Edwards, UK Information Commissioner. "We need to educate students about the risks and consequences of hacking and make sure they understand why it's not a game."
The ICO has also highlighted cases where staff members have been involved in breaches, often due to poor password management or inadequate security protocols.
"It's not just students who are responsible for these breaches," said Edwards. "We've seen instances where staff have compromised systems by using weak passwords or sharing login credentials with colleagues."
The trend of student hacking is not unique to the UK. In the United States, a 2022 survey found that nearly 40% of high school students admitted to engaging in some form of cyberbullying or online harassment.
"This is a global issue," said Dr. Rachel O'Connell, a cybersecurity expert at the University of California, Berkeley. "Young people are increasingly tech-savvy and may not fully understand the implications of their actions."
The ICO has urged schools and colleges to review their security measures and educate students about responsible online behavior.
"We need to work together to prevent these breaches and protect sensitive information," said Edwards. "We will continue to investigate incidents and provide guidance to educational institutions to ensure they are doing everything possible to safeguard data."
