MMA Star McGregor Drops Out of Irish Presidential Race
DUBLIN, IRELAND - Former MMA champion Conor McGregor announced on Monday that he is withdrawing his candidacy from the upcoming Irish presidential election, set for October 24. McGregor's decision comes just weeks after he declared his intention to run, citing a desire for "real change" in Ireland.
In a statement posted on X, McGregor said his intention to run had been "sincere and genuine," but that he would not pursue the candidacy for now. "Following careful reflection, and after consulting with my family, I am withdrawing my candidacy from this presidential race," he wrote.
McGregor's decision has sparked mixed reactions among Irish politicians and citizens. Some have expressed disappointment at his withdrawal, while others see it as a pragmatic move given the challenges of running a successful campaign in Ireland.
"I think Conor made a bold move by throwing his hat into the ring, but ultimately, I don't think he had a realistic chance of winning," said Senator Aodhán Ó Ríordáin, a member of the Irish parliament. "The rules in Ireland are tough, and it's not easy to get nominated without significant support from local authorities or parliamentary members."
McGregor's campaign was notable for its populist tone and his pledge to put bills back to the people before signing them into law. His supporters saw him as a breath of fresh air in Irish politics, but critics accused him of being out of touch with the needs of ordinary citizens.
The decision to withdraw from the race has been met with relief by some who were concerned about McGregor's lack of experience in politics and his divisive views on immigration.
