Reasoning
As of late 2024, we already have 4+ providers offering GPT-4-competitive models: OpenAI (GPT-4/Turbo), Anthropic (Claude 3 Opus), Google (Gemini 1.5 Pro), and Meta (Llama 3.1 405B). By Q4 2026 (20 months away), achieving a 5th distinct competitor at competitive pricing requires only one additional serious entrant from players like Mistral, xAI, or emerging Chinese models (like Deepseek-V3), which is highly likely given the rapid commoditization of frontier models and multiple well-funded competitors in development. The main headwind is defining "competitive pricing"—if this requires matching OpenAI's gpt-4o pricing (~$0.03/$0.06 per 1k tokens), fewer providers may achieve this, but if it means within 2-3x of pricing, we're already near the threshold.Key uncertainty
The definition of "GPT-4-class capability"—if the bar rises (e.g., GPT-5 emerges as the new standard by Q4 2026), the question becomes much harder, reducing probability to ~35%. Current interpretation assumes GPT-4-level performance (reasoning, coding, long context) remains the competitive tier.
