D66 party leader Rob Jetten has claimed victory in the Dutch general election, with his party narrowly leading anti-Islam populist Geert Wilders' Freedom Party by 15,000 votes. According to Dutch news agency ANP, even though the vote count is not complete, Wilders can no longer win. The electoral council is expected to officially confirm the results.
Jetten, 38, posted on X, "We are the biggest party in the Netherlands! Now we'll get to work for all Dutch people." Wilders responded, saying, "What arrogance not to wait for that," referring to the electoral council's decision. Projections from about 99% of the vote put both parties on 26 seats in the 150-seat parliament, but ANP suggests Jetten's centrists could win a 27th seat.
Jetten told reporters he was "very proud of this historic result" and now felt a great responsibility to form a stable and ambitious government. Wilders had led opinion polls going into the election, but Rob Jetten's D66 party ultimately secured a narrow lead.
In the run-up to the election, both parties had campaigned on different policy platforms. Jetten's D66 focused on issues such as climate change, economic growth, and social welfare, while Wilders' Freedom Party emphasized immigration control, law and order, and a more restrictive approach to Islam.
Wilders' Freedom Party had gained significant traction in recent years, particularly among voters concerned about immigration and national identity. Jetten's D66, on the other hand, has traditionally been a centrist liberal party with a strong focus on social justice and human rights.
The Dutch general election is a significant event in the country's politics, with the outcome determining the composition of the 150-seat parliament. The new government will be formed by the party or coalition that secures a majority of seats. Jetten's D66 is now tipped to become the largest party in the Netherlands, with the possibility of forming a coalition government.
The electoral council is expected to officially confirm the results in the coming days, and Jetten's D66 will likely begin negotiations with other parties to form a government. The outcome of these negotiations will determine the future direction of the country and the policies that will be implemented.
