Thailand and Cambodia agreed to an immediate ceasefire. The agreement halts almost three weeks of intense clashes. Defence ministers from both countries announced the deal in a joint statement.

The ceasefire took effect at noon local time (05:00 GMT) on Saturday. The agreement freezes current front lines. Civilians living in border areas can now return home. Thailand will release 18 Cambodian soldiers held since July after 72 hours of the ceasefire.

Hundreds of soldiers are believed to have died in the clashes. Nearly one million people were displaced. The agreement prioritizes the return of displaced people. It also includes removing landmines.

The breakthrough followed days of talks. China and the US provided diplomatic encouragement. The clashes occurred in border areas.

Both countries will now focus on implementing the ceasefire. They will also work on demining efforts. Further talks are expected to address long-term border issues.
