Thailand and Cambodia agreed to an immediate ceasefire. The agreement halts weeks of deadly clashes. Defence ministers from both countries announced the news. The ceasefire took effect at noon local time (05:00 GMT) on Saturday.
The agreement freezes current front lines. Civilians can now return home. Nearly one million people were displaced during the conflict. Dozens were killed in the fighting. Thailand will release 18 Cambodian soldiers after 72 hours of ceasefire. These soldiers were held since July.
The agreement prioritizes the return of displaced people. Landmine removal is also included. China and the US provided diplomatic encouragement during talks.
The clashes stemmed from long-standing border disputes.
Further talks are expected to address the root causes of the conflict. The focus remains on maintaining the ceasefire and ensuring civilian safety.
