A deadly explosion ripped through a mosque in Homs, Syria, during Friday prayers. At least eight people died and 18 were injured. The blast occurred inside the Imam Ali ibn Abi Talib Mosque.
The explosion took place in the Wadi al-Dhahab neighborhood. Syrian state news agency Sana published images showing a devastated interior. Blackened walls, shattered windows, and bloodstained carpets were visible. A security source told Sana that an explosive device was detonated.
Syria's Foreign Ministry condemned the attack as a "terrorist crime." They stated it aimed to undermine the country's security. Sunni extremist group Saraya Ansar al-Sunnah claimed responsibility. The group stated it collaborated with another unidentified group. They used explosives planted at the site.
Wadi al-Dhahab is primarily inhabited by members of the Alawite ethnoreligious group. Saraya Ansar al-Sunnah is a Sunni extremist organization. Authorities are searching for those responsible. Investigations are ongoing.
