A ceasefire between Thailand and Cambodia began Saturday along their shared border. The agreement aims to end weeks of deadly clashes. The fighting displaced nearly one million people.
The ceasefire took effect at noon local time (05:00 GMT). Defence ministers from both countries agreed to freeze current front lines. Reinforcements are banned. Civilians can return home as soon as possible. After 72 hours, Thailand will release 18 Cambodian soldiers held since July.
The agreement prioritizes the return of displaced people. Landmine removal is also part of the deal. China and the US provided diplomatic encouragement during talks.
The conflict stemmed from long-standing border disputes.
Both countries will now focus on implementing the ceasefire terms. The return of displaced civilians is the immediate priority. Further talks are expected to address the underlying border issues.
