Four hikers were found dead in the Vardousia Mountains of central Greece. The three men and one woman were buried by an avalanche. The discovery was made Friday evening after a large search operation.
The hikers went missing on Christmas Day. They were ascending Korakas peak when conditions deteriorated rapidly. Authorities believe an avalanche swept them away on a steep slope near the summit, at approximately 2,000m altitude.
A friend of the hikers raised the alarm when they did not return as expected. Rescue efforts were hampered by low temperatures and poor visibility. Drones and helicopters struggled to assist in the search.
The Vardousia Mountains are known for challenging terrain. Weather conditions can change quickly at high altitudes. This tragedy highlights the risks associated with winter hiking in mountainous regions.
An investigation is underway. Authorities will assess the specific circumstances leading to the avalanche. Further details will be released as they become available.
