Four hikers were found dead in the Vardousia Mountains of central Greece. The group, consisting of three men and one woman, went missing on Christmas Day. An avalanche buried them near the summit of Korakas peak.
The bodies were discovered Friday evening. A large-scale search operation took place in the Fokida region. Fire authorities located the hikers partially covered by snow on a steep slope. Rescue officials confirmed the avalanche as the cause of death.
A friend of the hikers raised the alarm when they did not return as expected. Weather conditions deteriorated rapidly at high altitude. Low temperatures and poor visibility hampered the search efforts.
The hikers began their ascent in favorable weather. The Vardousia Mountains are known for challenging terrain. The Hellenic Fire Service deployed drones and a helicopter, but their effectiveness was limited by the conditions.
Further investigations are underway. Authorities will assess the circumstances surrounding the avalanche. Recovery operations are ongoing.
