Thailand and Cambodia Implement Ceasefire After Weeks of Deadly Clashes
A ceasefire between Thailand and Cambodia went into effect, halting weeks of deadly border clashes that displaced nearly one million people. The agreement, reached by the defense ministers of both countries, aims to de-escalate tensions and allow civilians to return to their homes.
The ceasefire took effect at noon local time (05:00 GMT). According to a joint statement, the defense ministers agreed to freeze the front lines, ban reinforcements, and facilitate the return of civilians to border areas as soon as possible.
The agreement was reached during a special meeting at a border checkpoint in Chanthaburi province, Thailand, attended by Cambodia's Defence Minister Tea Seiha and Thailand's Defence Minister Natthaphon Narkphanit.
In addition to de-escalation and the return of displaced civilians, the agreement focuses on the removal of landmines. Thailand reserved the right to self-defense if the ceasefire is violated.
The recent conflict forced nearly one million people from their homes. The agreement highlights the role of international diplomacy in resolving conflicts and the importance of humanitarian efforts in the aftermath of armed conflict. Diplomatic efforts from China and the US facilitated the agreement.
