Jeffrey R. Holland, a high-ranking leader in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and next in line to become its president, died early Saturday morning in Salt Lake City at the age of 85. The church announced his death on its website, citing complications associated with kidney disease as the cause.
Holland was a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, a governing body that helps set church policy and oversees its business interests, according to Fortune. He was the longest-tenured member of the Quorum after President Dallin H. Oaks, making him next in line for the church's presidency under its established succession plan. Oaks, 93, is currently the president of the church, which has more than 17 million members worldwide.
Holland's role within the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles involved guiding the church's direction and managing its extensive affairs. The Associated Press reported that Holland participated in a news conference at the Conference Center in Salt Lake City on January 27, 2015.
