DEVELOPING: Incoming Archbishop of Canterbury, Dame Sarah Mullally, faces intense pressure to abandon a £100 million slavery reparations plan. Conservative MPs and peers are demanding she scrap the initiative.
They argue the funds are legally restricted to church upkeep and clergy salaries. The Church Commissioners insist the fund's arrangements are being developed transparently and legally.
The reparations proposal, announced in January 2023, followed a report detailing the Church of England's historical ties to transatlantic slavery. The report revealed a fund established in 1704 was used to finance slavery.
Mullally, currently the Bishop of London, assumes her new role next month. The Church Commissioners are standing by the plan.
This is a developing story.
