The Google Pixel Watch 4 has renewed interest in smartwatches for some users, according to a TechCrunch review. The reviewer, Ivan Mehta, reported testing the new device after primarily using analog watches or basic fitness trackers for several years.
Mehta cited the Pixel Watch 4's design and improved features as key factors in his renewed interest. He particularly praised the circular design, reminiscent of the Moto 360, and the curved domed Actua 360 display with thinner bezels. The review unit was the 41mm model, but Mehta stated a preference for the larger 45mm size for its increased battery capacity and larger display.
A significant improvement noted was the display's brightness, reaching 3,000 nits of peak brightness, which enhances usability in daylight conditions. Mehta also highlighted the battery life, stating that even with the smaller size, he was able to achieve more than a day's use on days with lighter activity.
The Pixel Watch 4, however, uses a proprietary charger, requiring users to place the watch on a specific cradle for charging.
Mehta's experience reflects a potential shift in user perception towards smartwatches, driven by advancements in design, display technology, and battery performance. The review suggests that Google's latest offering addresses some common concerns that previously deterred users from adopting smartwatches, such as limited battery life and poor outdoor visibility.
