An Illinois driver was charged with felonies after allegedly striking and killing a pedestrian while livestreaming on TikTok. Tynesha McCarty-Wroten, known as Tea Tyme on TikTok, faces charges of reckless homicide and aggravated use of a communications device resulting in death, according to the Zion Police Department. The incident occurred when McCarty-Wroten's vehicle allegedly entered an intersection against a red light, striking Darren Lucas, who later died at a hospital.
A video circulating on TikTok appears to show McCarty-Wroten speaking into her phone moments before a loud thud. An offscreen child then asks, "What was that?" to which McCarty-Wroten replies, "I hit somebody." Surveillance footage reportedly corroborates that McCarty-Wroten did not slow down or change course before the collision.
The charges raise concerns about distracted driving and the use of social media while operating a vehicle. McCarty-Wroten's lawyer told the New York Times that evidence will show the incident was an accident, a negligent act, but not intentional or reckless.
The case highlights the potential dangers of livestreaming and using communication devices while driving, an issue that has prompted debate about stricter regulations for social media platforms and driver safety. TikTok has not yet released a statement.
McCarty-Wroten is expected to appear in court soon. The investigation is ongoing.
