A train derailment in southern Mexico injured at least 15 people Sunday. The accident halted traffic on the Interoceanic Train line. The line connects the Pacific Ocean with the Gulf of Mexico.
The Interoceanic Train derailed near Nizanda, Oaxaca. The train was passing a curve when the accident occurred. Oaxaca Gov. Salomon Jara stated government agencies are assisting the injured. 241 passengers and nine crew members were aboard.
The derailment immediately stopped rail traffic. Authorities are investigating the cause. Injured passengers received medical attention at the scene.
The Interoceanic Train was inaugurated in 2023. It is part of a larger plan to improve train travel in southern Mexico. The goal is to develop infrastructure along the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This area is a narrow strip of land between the Pacific and Gulf. The government aims to create a strategic trade corridor. This corridor would link the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans via ports and rail. The train currently runs from Salina Cruz to Coatzacoalcos, a distance of about 180 miles.
Rail service remains suspended. Officials will assess the damage and begin repairs. The investigation into the cause of the derailment is ongoing.
