A train derailment in southern Mexico injured at least 15 people Sunday. The accident halted traffic on the Interoceanic Train line. The line connects the Pacific Ocean with the Gulf of Mexico.
The Interoceanic Train derailed near Nizanda, Oaxaca. The train was passing a curve when the incident occurred. Oaxaca Gov. Salomon Jara stated that government agencies are assisting the injured. The train carried 241 passengers and nine crew members.
The derailment immediately suspended service on the line. Authorities are investigating the cause of the accident. Injured passengers received medical attention at the scene.
The Interoceanic Train was inaugurated in 2023. Former President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador launched the service. It is part of a larger plan to develop southern Mexico's infrastructure. The government aims to create a trade corridor across the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This corridor would link the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. The train currently runs from Salina Cruz to Coatzacoalcos. The route covers approximately 180 miles.
Rail service will remain suspended until further notice. An investigation is underway to determine the cause of the derailment. The government will likely assess the safety of the rail line.
