According to the support page, the original Gmail address will continue to function as an alias, allowing users to sign into Google services with either the new or old address. However, users will be restricted from creating additional Gmail addresses tied to their account for a period of 12 months after the change.

As of Sunday afternoon, the English-language version of the Gmail support site had not yet been updated to reflect the change. The current English version states, "If your account's email address ends in gmail.com, you usually can't change it," and suggests alternative solutions such as changing the name associated with the address or creating a new account and transferring data.
