A Sydney shop owner is being hailed a hero after disarming a gunman during a mass shooting at Bondi Beach. Ahmed al Ahmed, a Syrian-born father of two, tackled one of the two shooters, wrestling away a long-arm gun. The attack occurred on Sunday, December 14th, during a Hanukkah event.
Al Ahmed told CBS News his "soul asked me to do that." He aimed to stop the gunman from killing innocent people. He warned the shooter, Sajid Akram, 50, to drop his weapon. Al Ahmed was shot several times by the second gunman.
Fifteen people died in the attack. Forty others were injured. It is Australia's deadliest mass shooting since 1996. Al Ahmed believes his actions saved lives.
Police are investigating the motives of the two shooters. The incident has sparked national mourning and calls for stricter gun control. Further details will be released as the investigation progresses.
