A Sydney shop owner is being hailed a hero after disarming a gunman during a mass shooting at Bondi Beach. Ahmed al Ahmed, a Syrian-born father of two, tackled one of the shooters, Sajid Akram, 50, at a Hanukkah event on Sunday, December 14. Al Ahmed told CBS News his "soul asked me to do that," and his "target was just to take the gun from him...and not killing innocent people."
The attack, which claimed 15 lives and injured 40 others, unfolded at a Jewish event. Al Ahmed wrestled a long-arm gun from Akram. He was shot several times by the second gunman. Despite his injuries, Al Ahmed believes his actions saved lives.
The incident is Australia's deadliest mass shooting since 1996. Authorities are investigating the motives behind the attack. The focus remains on supporting the victims and their families.
The investigation is ongoing. Further details are expected to be released as they become available.
