Many new drone users in the UK who received drones as Christmas gifts faced a new requirement to take a theory test before flying them outdoors, effective January 1st. The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) mandated that individuals intending to fly drones or model aircraft weighing 100g or more outside must complete an online theory test to obtain a Flyer ID. This requirement previously only applied to heavier drones.
The regulator estimated that up to half a million people in the UK could be affected by these new rules. CAA spokesperson Jonathan Nicholson stated that with drones becoming a "common Christmas present," it was important for people to know how to comply with the law. The CAA emphasized the importance of understanding and adhering to the regulations for safe drone operation.
