Box office revenue in Spain decreased by 8% in 2025, totaling €453 million ($534.5 million), according to figures released Tuesday by Comscore Movies Spain. The decline was attributed to unseasonably warm weather in October and a shortage of major blockbuster releases from the United States. The total admissions for the year reached 65 million.
The 2025 results stand in contrast to global cinema trends, where many key markets are expected to either slightly increase or maintain their 2024 box office numbers. Spain's performance is particularly notable as its 2024 box office figures were already 22% below the pre-COVID-19 average from 2017-2019, marking it as the weakest performer among Europe's five largest markets.
Despite the overall downturn, Spanish cinema achieved a solid 19% share of total theater grosses. The film "Father There is Only One 5" topped the local film charts, demonstrating the continued appeal of domestic productions.
The Spanish box office's struggle highlights the complex interplay of factors influencing cinema attendance. Weather patterns, the availability of compelling content, and broader economic trends all contribute to the overall health of the industry. The reliance on major U.S. releases also underscores the vulnerability of local markets to fluctuations in the global film landscape. The decrease serves as a reminder of the challenges facing the Spanish film industry as it seeks to recover from the impact of the pandemic and adapt to evolving consumer preferences.
