Idris Elba is set to receive a knighthood in the U.K.’s New Year Honors, recognizing his contributions to charity, including an anti-knife crime campaign and the Elba Hope Foundation, which he established with his wife. The announcement, made on December 30, 2025, also included the awarding of an MBE (Member of the Order of the British Empire) to Cynthia Erivo, acknowledging her services to the arts.
Elba's knighthood follows a year in which he portrayed both the U.S. president in "House of Dynamite" and the British prime minister in "Heads of State," roles that ironically preceded the honor recognizing his real-world impact. The Elba Hope Foundation focuses on providing opportunities and support to young people in Africa.
Also named in the New Year Honors list was Meera Syal, comedian, writer, and actor known for the TV show "The Kumars at No 42," who will become a dame. The New Year Honors are awarded annually, recognizing individuals for outstanding achievements and service to the United Kingdom and its overseas territories. The selection process involves nominations from the public, which are then reviewed by committees before recommendations are made to the Prime Minister and, ultimately, the King. The honors are officially conferred at investiture ceremonies held throughout the year.
