UK Drone Users Face New Theory Test for Outdoor Flights
Starting January 1st, many new drone users in the UK are required to pass an online theory test before being allowed to fly their devices outdoors. The new regulation, implemented by the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), applies to drones and model aircraft weighing 100g or more.
The CAA estimates that up to half a million people in the UK will be affected by the new requirements. The initiative aims to ensure safe drone operation by mandating registration and knowledge of regulations, especially as drones become increasingly common.
According to the BBC, the new rule means that many people who received a drone as a Christmas present will need to take the theory test to get a Flyer ID before flying outdoors. Previously, this was only required for heavier drones.
CAA spokesperson Jonathan Nicholson emphasized the importance of understanding the law, stating that drones are becoming a "common Christmas present."
In addition to the theory test, owners of camera-equipped drones weighing 250g or more must also register with the CAA. The new regulations are intended to promote responsible drone usage and public safety.
