Idris Elba was set to receive a knighthood in the United Kingdom's New Year Honors, according to Variety. The honor recognized Elba's extensive charity work, including his anti-knife crime campaign and the Elba Hope Foundation. The announcement came after a busy year for the actor, who ironically portrayed both the U.S. president and British prime minister in the films "House of Dynamite" and "Heads of State," respectively.
Cynthia Erivo was also appointed a Member of the British Empire (MBE) in the New Year Honors. Meera Syal was to be made a dame for her contributions to literature, drama, and charity, Variety reported.
The New Year Honors recognize contributions across various fields, with Elba specifically being noted for his philanthropic efforts in addition to his acting career. The honors list, released annually, acknowledges the achievements and service of individuals across the U.K.
