China fired long-range rockets near Taiwan on Tuesday, escalating military exercises. The People's Liberation Army (PLA) demonstrated its ability to strike and isolate the island. The PLA launched the rockets into waters surrounding Taiwan.
Taiwan's defense official, Gen. Hsieh Jih-sheng, reported 27 rockets fired into live-fire zones. Chinese state broadcaster CCTV claimed dozens of rockets hit waters north of Taiwan. The PLA deployed destroyers, frigates, and fighter-bombers. These units practiced attacking enemy aircraft, ships, and submarines. Ships and aircraft were warned to avoid seven live-fire zones.
Taiwan's Ministry of National Defense reported 11 Chinese navy ships and eight coast guard vessels approached within 24 miles of Taiwan's coast.
These exercises follow increased tensions between China and Taiwan. China claims Taiwan as its own territory. Taiwan maintains its autonomy.
Further military drills and international responses are expected. The situation remains tense.
