New UK Drone Regulations Require Theory Test for Outdoor Flights
Starting January 1st, new regulations in the United Kingdom require many drone users to pass an online theory test before flying outdoors. The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) initiative impacts an estimated half a million people and applies to those operating drones or model aircraft weighing 100g or more.
The new rule mandates that individuals obtain a Flyer ID by completing the CAA online theory test. Previously, this requirement only applied to heavier drones. According to the BBC, the CAA believes the new requirements are necessary to ensure safe drone operation, especially as drones become increasingly common.
CAA spokesperson Jonathan Nicholson emphasized the importance of understanding drone regulations, stating that drones are becoming a "common Christmas present." He added that it was important people knew how to comply with the law.
In addition to the theory test, owners of camera-equipped drones weighing 250g or more must also register with the CAA. The regulator hopes that these measures will promote responsible drone usage and increase awareness of safety guidelines.
