Buddhist monks on a peace walk from Texas to Washington, D.C., are undeterred after a highway accident injured two members. The incident occurred outside Houston when a truck struck their escort vehicle. The group of two dozen monks began their journey in Fort Worth, Texas, on October 26.
Despite the setback, the monks continue their trek, now in Georgia. On Tuesday, marking day 66, they walked from Morrow to Decatur, near Atlanta, and held a public Peace Gathering. The monks and their dog, Aloka, are traveling through 10 states.
The group plans to pass through Athens, GA, and cities in North Carolina and Virginia. They are en route to the nation's capital. The monks have gained a large social media following, with over 400,000 followers on Facebook.
Buddhism has a long history of peace activism. The monks aim to highlight this tradition. Updates and inspirational messages are regularly posted on their Facebook page.
