Tatiana Schlossberg, environmental journalist and granddaughter of the late President John F. Kennedy, died Tuesday at the age of 35, following a diagnosis of acute myeloid leukemia last year. The John F. Kennedy Library Foundation announced her death in a statement posted on social media, saying, "Our beautiful Tatiana passed away this morning. She will always be in our hearts."
Schlossberg revealed her diagnosis in a November 2025 essay in The New Yorker, detailing that she was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia in May 2024, shortly after the birth of her second child. Doctors discovered her elevated white blood cell count while she was hospitalized. Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is a cancer of the blood and bone marrow, characterized by the rapid growth of abnormal white blood cells that interfere with the production of normal blood cells. According to the National Cancer Institute, AML is relatively rare, with the highest incidence occurring in older adults.
In her essay, titled "A Battle With My Blood," Schlossberg described undergoing multiple rounds of chemotherapy, two stem cell transplants, and participation in clinical trials. She wrote that during her most recent trial, her doctor informed her that treatment could potentially extend her life for about a year.
Dr. Elias Jabbour, a professor of medicine in the Department of Leukemia at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, who was not involved in Schlossberg's care, explained that AML with rare mutations can be particularly challenging to treat. "The specific genetic mutations within the leukemia cells can significantly impact treatment response and overall prognosis," Jabbour said. "While chemotherapy and stem cell transplants are standard approaches, targeted therapies and clinical trials are often explored to improve outcomes in these complex cases."
Caroline Kennedy, Schlossberg's mother and daughter of President Kennedy, and Edwin Schlossberg, her father, have not yet released individual statements. The family has requested privacy during this time.
The John F. Kennedy Library Foundation did not disclose the cause of death or where Schlossberg died. Further details regarding memorial services are expected to be released in the coming days.
