Environmental journalist Tatiana Schlossberg, granddaughter of the late President John F. Kennedy, died Tuesday at the age of 35, following a battle with leukemia. The John F. Kennedy Library Foundation announced her death in a statement posted on social media, saying, "Our beautiful Tatiana passed away this morning. She will always be in our hearts." The statement did not specify the location of her death.
Schlossberg revealed her diagnosis of acute myeloid leukemia (AML) in a November 2025 essay published in The New Yorker. She was diagnosed in May 2024, at age 34, shortly after the birth of her second child, when a doctor noticed an elevated white blood cell count.
AML is a cancer of the blood and bone marrow, characterized by the rapid growth of abnormal white blood cells that interfere with the production of normal blood cells. According to the National Cancer Institute, AML is relatively rare, with an estimated 20,000 new cases diagnosed each year in the United States. While it can occur at any age, it is more common in older adults.
In her essay, titled "A Battle With My Blood," Schlossberg detailed her experience undergoing multiple rounds of chemotherapy, two stem cell transplants, and participation in clinical trials. She wrote that her AML had a rare mutation typically seen in older individuals. She recounted a conversation with her doctor during her most recent clinical trial, where she was told that treatment could potentially extend her life for about a year.
Dr. Mikkael Sekeres, a hematologist at the Cleveland Clinic, explained that AML with rare mutations can be particularly challenging to treat. "These mutations can affect how well the leukemia cells respond to standard chemotherapy," he said. "Stem cell transplants can be curative in some cases, but the success rate depends on various factors, including the patient's overall health and the specific genetic mutations involved."
Caroline Kennedy, Schlossberg's mother, and Edwin Schlossberg, her father, have not yet released individual statements.
The news of Schlossberg's death has prompted an outpouring of grief and tributes on social media, with many remembering her contributions to environmental journalism and her advocacy for climate action. Her work often focused on the intersection of climate change and public health.
The Kennedy family has experienced numerous tragedies throughout its history. Schlossberg's death marks another loss for the prominent American family. Further details regarding memorial services were not immediately available.
