The Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025 is moving into the knockout phase, with the round of 16 beginning on Saturday, January 3. Sixteen teams remain in contention for the title after the completion of the group stage matches.
Nigeria was one of the best performers during the group phase, registering three wins in three fixtures. Senegal, pre-tournament favorites, finished top of Group D with seven points after two wins and a draw. They are set to face Sudan, the lowest-ranked side left in the competition, at Ibn Batouta Stadium in Tangier on January 3 at 5pm GMT. This marks Sudan's first appearance in the knockout stages in 14 years.
South Africa edged Zimbabwe 3-2 to book their place in the AFCON 2025 knockout stage. Ivory Coast fought back against Gabon to top their AFCON group ahead of Cameroon.
The round of 16 features eight fixtures that will determine which teams advance to the quarter-finals. The tournament, held in various cities across the host nation, will culminate in the final match to crown the champion of Africa.
