At least five people died as protests over Iran's rising cost of living intensified. Demonstrations spread across the country. The semi-official Fars news agency reported three deaths and 17 injuries in Azna, Lorestan province on Thursday. That city is about 300km southwest of Tehran. Two deaths occurred earlier in Lordegan, approximately 470km south of Tehran. Videos online showed burning objects and gunfire amid chants of "Shameless! Shameless!" The protests began amid growing anger over Iran's struggling economy and a rapidly devaluing currency. Shopkeepers and traders in Tehran protested economic conditions on December 29, 2025. Iran's government has yet to issue a formal response. Further protests are expected. The international community is watching closely.
