A devastating fire in Crans-Montana, Switzerland, claimed the lives of approximately 40 New Year's revelers early Thursday. The blaze erupted at Le Constellation bar, a popular spot in the upscale ski resort town. Around 115 people sustained injuries.
The fire triggered a rapid flashover, igniting the bar's interior almost instantly. An explosion followed soon after. The victims were young, mostly between 16 and 26 years old, and came from various countries. The incident occurred in the early hours of Thursday morning.
Swiss President Guy Parmelin called the event one of the country's worst tragedies. Hospitals in Lausanne and Zurich are treating severely burned victims. Lausanne's hospital is caring for 22, while Zurich's is treating 15.
