Tragedy struck a Swiss ski resort early this morning. A fire in a bar in Crans-Montana killed around 40 people, police confirmed. The blaze also injured 115 others, many severely.
The fire erupted at approximately 01:30 (00:30 GMT) during New Year's celebrations at Le Constellation bar. Investigators are on scene but have ruled out an attack as the cause. The victims include people from various countries.
Emergency services responded massively. Thirteen helicopters, 42 ambulances, and 150 responders deployed to the Valais region. Sixty injured individuals were transported to Sion hospital, overwhelming its intensive care unit.
Crans-Montana, located in the Valais region, is a popular tourist destination. The area is known for its ski slopes and nightlife.
Authorities are now focused on identifying the deceased. Their priority is to return the bodies to their families as quickly as possible.
