A monumental church in Amsterdam was ravaged by flames on New Year’s Day. The Vondelkerk, a deconsecrated church, caught fire around 12:45 a.m. The blaze caused extensive damage to the 150-year-old cultural monument.
Flames shot through the church's neo-Gothic spire. The fire quickly consumed the roof and caused the tower to collapse. Strong winds spread sparks and debris. Authorities brought the fire under control by approximately 11 a.m.
