CRANS-MONTANA, Switzerland - A devastating fire ripped through the "Le Constellation" bar in the Swiss ski resort of Crans-Montana early Thursday, leaving approximately 40 people dead. The blaze broke out shortly after midnight during New Year's celebrations. Around 115 people were injured, many in their teens and twenties.
The fire trapped revelers inside the crowded bar. Axel Clavier, a 16-year-old from Paris, escaped by breaking open a window. He reported that some of his friends were still missing hours after the incident.
Emergency services responded quickly to the scene. Mourners gathered late Thursday, leaving candles and flowers for the victims. The tragedy is one of the worst in Swiss history.
Le Constellation was a popular spot in Crans-Montana, a well-known ski resort in the Swiss Alps.
An investigation into the cause of the fire is underway. Authorities are working to identify the victims and support their families.
