Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky appointed Kyrylo Budanov, the current head of military intelligence, as his new chief of staff, following the resignation of Andriy Yermak a month prior amidst corruption allegations. Zelensky announced the appointment on social media, posting a photo of himself meeting with Budanov in Kyiv.
Zelensky stated that Ukraine requires a heightened focus on security matters. He emphasized the need for the development of defense and security forces, as well as progress on diplomatic negotiations. "At this time, Ukraine needs greater focus on security issues, the development of the defence and security forces of Ukraine, as well as on the diplomatic track of negotiations," Zelensky wrote. He cited Budanov's expertise and capabilities in these critical areas as key factors in his decision.
Budanov, 39, has been the head of the Hur military intelligence agency, which has claimed responsibility for several successful strikes against Russia since the beginning of the full-scale invasion in 2022. His predecessor, Andriy Yermak, held significant political influence and led Ukraine's negotiating team in talks with the United States aimed at resolving the conflict. The change in leadership comes at a critical time as Ukraine continues to navigate the ongoing war and seeks international support. The presidential office plays a crucial role in coordinating government policy and managing communications.
