A US judge ordered Brian Cole to remain in custody ahead of his trial. Cole is charged with planting pipe bombs outside the Democratic and Republican national headquarters. The incident occurred on January 5, 2021, the eve of the Capitol riot.
Magistrate Judge Matthew Sharbaugh made the ruling on Friday. The judge cited public safety as the reason for denying pre-trial release. Cole, 30, allegedly confessed to placing the bombs. The Republican National Committee (RNC) headquarters was one of the targets.
The Department of Justice is prosecuting the case. The arrest followed a lengthy investigation. The motive behind the alleged bombings remains under investigation.
The pipe bombs did not detonate. Law enforcement safely neutralized the devices. The incident added to the tension surrounding the January 6th events.
Cole will remain jailed pending trial. The trial date has not yet been set. Further court proceedings are expected in the coming weeks.
