Zelensky Appoints Intelligence Chief as Head of Presidential Office
Kyrylo Budanov, the head of Ukraine's military intelligence, was appointed as President Volodymyr Zelensky's new chief of staff, according to a statement made by Zelensky on social media. The appointment, which occurred just over a month after the previous chief of staff resigned amid a corruption row, signals a potential shift towards prioritizing security and defense amid the ongoing conflict with Russia.
Zelensky cited the need for "greater focus on security issues" at this time. He published a photo of his meeting with Budanov in Kyiv. Budanov, 39, previously led the Hur military intelligence, which has claimed responsibility for several strikes against Russia, according to the BBC.
The appointment follows the resignation of Andriy Yermak, who previously led negotiations with the U.S. According to reports, Zelensky has tasked Budanov with updating Ukraine's defense strategy and strengthening diplomatic efforts.
