FTSE 100 Reaches Historic 10,000 Milestone in New Year Rally
The FTSE 100 index, which tracks the 100 largest companies on the London Stock Exchange, achieved a record high of 10,000 points on the first trading day of the year. This marked a significant milestone for the index, representing a more than 21% increase from the previous year when it stood at just over 8,260, according to BBC Business reports.
The surge was fueled by strong performances in key sectors, including mining, defense, and banking. Shares in British brands such as Currys and Next also saw steep rises. The index briefly reached 10,046 points before closing the day at 9,951.
The FTSE 100's performance in 2025 outperformed major American indexes, despite concerns about high stock valuations in the US. While the index's performance benefits investors and can influence investment strategies, multiple news sources confirm that it is not a direct reflection of the overall UK economy.
